Theology Moment: Evangelism

I recently wrote a blog post titled, “Post-Modernism is Dead…Wait…What?“ In it I raised four points.

  1. We need to learn how to use technology within a theological context,
  2. We need to be evangelicals within this new context,
  3. We need to be a non-anxious presence in our communities, and
  4. We need to teach critical analysis of all things spiritual and religious.

Last week I followed up #1 here.  This is a follow up to #2.

What is evangelism?  One would think that our churches have well-defined evangelism since it seems to be a term especially used for the church.  But we have had a back-lash against evangelism and most view evangelism with suspicion.  Folks tend to think an evangelist is those crazy pastors on television who jump about and lay hands on people and then someone passes out on the floor.  Or it is someone who hounds you with the message that we must choose to follow Jesus or burn in the pits of hell.  The post-modern / pseudo modern person (including me) looks upon this with suspicion.  The result?  A distancing from evangelism.  We say, “I’m not an evangelist!”

Recently I was at a meeting and someone said, “You seem to have developed relationships with fundamental, evangelical churches.  How will they feel if they know you are also in relationship with us?”  My response was, “First, I am not giving up evangelical to them.  I am an evangelist.”  (And second, these organizations really don’t care…they don’t spend a lot of time worrying about who I hang out with!  How ego-centric.  Grin.).  So, really, in a post-modern context, what is evangelism and how can we tackle this maligned label?

In Greek, evangelism comes from εὐαγγέλιον .  (I am hoping the Greek characters are showing up here.)  This is in Christian Scripture and literally comes from εὔ = “good”, ἀγγέλλω = “I bring a message.”  “I bring a good message.”  It also comes from the four Gospels, i.e., “The Gospel of Mark the Evangelist.”  So it is about bringing a good message.  That’s the Gospel!  The good news.  What that means to you is…?…well…you need to complete that sentence for yourself.  And that’s the post/pseudo modern part of it.  In this age we get to deconstruct traditional meanings of words.  Now we can:

  • Rediscover the meaning of the word (I have a good message.)
  • Bring it forward to make new meaning in our world
  • Reclaim the word for our usage today

So, how can you complete this sentence?

I am an evangelist.  I bring a good message by ____________________ .

Hmm.  I would say the good news is straight forwardly communicated by Jesus himself.  What is most important?

28 One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, ‘Which commandment is the first of all?’29Jesus answered, ‘The first is, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one;30you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.”31The second is this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” There is no other commandment greater than these.’32Then the scribe said to him, ‘You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that “he is one, and besides him there is no other”;33and “to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength”, and “to love one’s neighbour as oneself”,—this is much more important than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.’34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, ‘You are not far from the kingdom of God.’  Mark 12:28-34

I am an evangelist.  I bring a good message by loving others and by loving myself.  I do this by ____________________ .

Regarding the intersection of technology / communication and evangelism, it isn’t really that difficult.  If we develop our mission, value, and vision and clearly stay within that confine no matter what technology of communication we are using, then we are using technology to do evangelism.

Mission:  ____________________ .
Value:  Love God & Love Neighbor & Love Self
Vision:  ____________________ .

This will naturally look different for different people and organizations!  But it is the good news.

Go forth!  Reclaim the good message and be an evanglist!

Call to Worship

A small mustard seed sprouts
and becomes a life-giving plant.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.

The life-giving plant grows
and becomes home to the birds of the sky.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.

The birds of the sky carry the mustard seed
to new places and a new creation begins.

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be JHWH’s glorious name forever;
may God’s glory fill the whole earth.
Amen.

Opening Prayer

God of wonder and glory,
Your Kingdom abounds with love and mercy.  Every day you drop seeds of compassion in our hearts and show incredible patience as you wait for it to root and to grow.  Help us to provide fertile ground for your loving kindness so that we may respond fully to the call of your love and go forth planting seeds of love and mercy on your behalf.  In the name of Creator, Christ, and Spirit, Amen.

Prayer for Illumination

Lord, open our hearts and minds
by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that, as the Scriptures are read
and your Word proclaimed,
we may hear with joy what you say to us today.
Amen.

Scripture Reading:  Mark 4:26-34

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 He also said, “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed
(Mt 13:31–32; Lk 13:18–19)

30 He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”

The Use of Parables

33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. [1]

Response

Let us pray.

O Lord,
You are so patient with our human strivings.
Even though we desire to be in charge of the field,
            organizing the seeds,
            designating areas to be planted,
You hold us gently and help us see that your Spirit
            cannot be contained.
Your Kingdom will grow no matter how much
            we try to contain it.
Help us to see that Your Spirit moves,
            that Your Creation grows,
            and that Your Word sprouts.
Amen.

And now we bring to you, O God, Creator, Christ, and Spirit, the needs of each other and the needs of the world.

Prayers of the People

Mighty God of wonder and glory, we praise and thank you for the promise of Your Kingdom. Especially we thank you for

ministries of compassion…
love that transforms hearts…
the earth that supports us…
the Church of Christ in all nations and in all forms…

Loving God, we give you thanks.

Gracious God, we are a hurting community.  Hear the pain of your loved ones.  Especially we pray for

our political leaders…
the homeless and hungry…
those affected by incarceration…
our violent world in need of redemption…

Merciful God, hear our prayer.

For what else do we pray?

…Loving God                                  …Merciful God
We Give you thanks         Hear our prayer

Concluding Collect

Gracious God,
You show us that your seeds can sprout no matter where they are dropped.  Help us to recognize love, compassion, and justice so that when we see them sprouting we will help them to grow, bringing Your Kingdom to life.  In Your holy name we pray, Amen.

Ecumenical Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Pass the Peace

Please pass the peace that blossoms with the help of Christ.

Benediction

The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed,
            carried by the wind,
            spread by the Spirit,
growing where planted.
Go forth knowing that the Kingdom
            is carried when you love,
            spread when you show compassion,
            and grows when you blossom.
Amen.

Creative Moment: The Mustard Plant

One day, a small mustard plant started growing in the faithful farmer’s field. When the farmer saw it, he pulled it out and threw it to the side. Then the sabbath came and he rested from working in the fields. But that mustard plant didn’t rest! It’s roots were deep and it sprouted and grew back three times as big as it originally was!

When the farmer came back from his sabbath rest, he worked in another part of the field and didn’t notice that the mustard plant was growing and taking over the northern part of his crop. By the end of the week, that mustard plant was 9 times as big as it was just six days ago!

The farmer was torn! He had to tend to his crops but he had to get rid of the mustard plant too. It was now big enough that birds were living in the branches. Those birds would spread the seeds of the mustard plant far and wide if the farmer allowed the plant to stay and the birds to live there. He couldn’t have that! So the farmer removed the nests and went back to tending his crops.

Another week passed. The faithful farmer was becoming very annoyed with the mustard plant. It was trying to take over the entire north end of his crops! But at this point, there was little the farmer could do. The birds had moved back in and were dropping the seeds everywhere and little mustard plants were beginning to crop up all over. Plants were growing willy nilly all over the place, defying even the best planner’s attempt to predict where the plants would sprout. It was like trying to put out a wildfire with damp towel. It simply wasn’t working.

Soon, the mustard plant was so big that the crops in the field wouldn’t grow any more. The faithful farmer decided that fighting against the mustard plant was the wrong strategy. Instead of growing the old crop, he decided to harvest the mustard seed, grind it, and become a merchant of spices—joining forces with the mustard plant rather than working against it.

Listen!

listen!

shhh.
be still.
become ground.

hear!
ruach whispering.
fire roaring.
water dancing.

every molecule
crying out
waiting.

shhh.
listen.

God said,
I will live
in them.

shhh.
listen.

 Listen for the Divine

Random Quote

When we persevere with the help of a gentle discipline, we slowly come to hear the still, small voice and to feel the delicate breeze, and so to come to know the presence of Love.

windows: a meditation on “this i believe”

windows

Windowsas i look behind
i see a path of aged stone
worn away at the edges
cementing to its neighbor
existing since the
apple flew from the tree

as i look ahead
i see tangles and brambles
and flowers and warmth
and my foot reaches out
as the stone peeks
through the grasses
for a moment
while i hesitantly
test the ground
of all being

as i place my foot
down on the rock
the path is solid and
the tangles and brambles
dissolve into nothing
as the daisies lean towards
the sun gesturing
for me to proceed

as i look up
i see a mansion
welcoming me with
the scent of lavender
and love
calling out like
mama greeting me
after a long summer
away at camp

as i reach the door
i turn the handle
shaking and trembling
with fear and awe
standing at the portal
that leads to
a new place of belonging

as i step forward
realizing this is home
my ragged teddy bear
is waiting for me
on the worn chair
joy glinting off his
button eye

Papa! Mama!
i am home!

“In the garden, child.”

as i look out
i suddenly notice
the windows
each stained to create
a beautiful invitation
of loving encouragement
and lively warmth
leading to the garden

as i run from window
to window i am stunned
by the rainbow of promise
that dances before
my eyes
until i see him
and i am caught
by his image
as love overwhelms me
and my heart dances
and the garden glistens
through the
tears in my eyes

as i peek into the garden
i see Papa waiting for me
and my hand reaches out
to touch the beauty of
him and passes
through the glass
holding me in surprise
while i walk through the
window into the light
enraptured with him

i run to Papa
and leap into His arms
knocking Him back and
He receives me with
a chuckle and twirls
me headily through the
clouds with laughter
born of love and
grace.

The Defeat of Eros by Jacob Frances

I wanted to share this awesome poem fromThe Penguin Book of Hebrew Verse, edited and translated by T. Carmi.  Published 1981.  Pages 494-495.

Written by Jacob Frances in 1615-1667.  More information here.

The Defeat of Eros

Love, had I not known you during
other nights; had I not fingered your
works with my own hands; had I not
felt your flame within my heart; had I
not melted away, after that, like a snail;

had I not sensed with my own eyes,
ever since I saw the sunlight, what
mastery and power you exercise over
all this company which I have met,
from man to beast to insect–

Love, I would have considered you
today a mere nothing.  I would have
regarded Eros as naught and emptiness;
I would have called you a lamb in lion’s
clothing.

For the maiden armed herself and
stood up to Eros, with a heart like a
coat of mail that withstands all
weapons; and his arrows dropped onto
her bosom like wax onto marble.
